As the second semester approaches, juniors are preparing for a challenging time. The stress from AP exams, ACTs, and other extracurriculars is quickly approaching and may take a toll on students.
But, there is a way to take a weight off their backs. After winter break, seniors at South will begin their free ACT tutoring program every early release Wednesday after school. These tutoring sessions will be led by Seniors Asmitha Pallath, Aiden Yen, and Anita Joseph, students who also earned high scores on their standardized tests.
At ACT tutoring, “we give slide show presentations on strategies, different question types, and just how to go about answering certain questions” Yen said.
“We’ll split [the slides] up between the three of us so some of us does math and some reading, ” Pallath said. “We’ll come up with a couple easy and a lot of the challenging questions so that students can work on a packet for the first half of class. After the time is up, we go over all the questions and strategies for certain questions.”
As you can see, these leaders work hard to create resources that students can learn from. Even when they are busy, they still make time to prepare juniors for the ACT every week. Some students may think that preparing is useless and the ACT might not be that important, but there is actually more to that.
“[Studying] is especially important for the SAT, PSAT, and ACT because a lot of students think that they will just get what they get no matter what they do,” Pallath explained. “So they fail to realize that putting in the proper efforts to study can make your score go up a lot.”
It is also important to note that this class is a free resource given to students, so anyone can participate as long as they are determined to do well and put in the work.
“The ACT is a gateway to college, and colleges put standardized testing at a higher level,” Yen added. “If you do very well, you have more opportunities to go to better colleges and even win scholarships, which can be thousands to a full ride scholarship to colleges, taking off the financial burden of many.”
Your score is an important factor that impacts your future so it is important to take it seriously.
This tutoring is a great way to expose students to test questions and help prepare them to do well. It is important to start studying early and to utilize this resource that has been given to South. There’s no risk, only reward, so students should take advantage of this opportunity!
