Hinsdale South High School is home to over 70 different clubs and activities. These clubs range from enhancing creativity–like drawing or singing–to exploring the different cultures all around the world.
Today, Friday, March 13, Hinsdale South hosted a cultural fair where students and staff could come celebrate and learn about different cultures, foods, customs, and traditions from around the world. Many clubs and organizations worked tirelessly to build this cultural fair so that students could learn about the diversity of our school.
“I thought of different things that would be different from other sponsors but were still fun and culturally relevant that someone who didn’t know any Spanish could try,” Spanish Club sponsor, Mrs. Vrtis, said. “I think it is good to show diversity and give people an opportunity to learn. We used to do the ethnic fair, but during the pandemic, it disbanded so it is nice to revive the cultural diversity at South.”
This fair is significant because it was the first in many years that South hosted an event that honored the different backgrounds of our student body. It was exciting to see the emergence of this cultural fair and what different sponsors and clubs had to offer.
“Our members discussed what activities might be interesting and engaging for students when they stop by the table,” said French Club sponsor, Mrs. Mikulcik. “Our student leader attended a planning meeting with Mr. Chavarria and all the other participants, and we created materials, researched, and purchased French candy.”
All of this hard work has led to “giving all students the opportunity to share about their home cultures and to learn about what fosters and celebrates our diverse Hornet community!” Mikulcik eagerly said.
This shows how all the hard work and careful planning that each organization, along with its members, had put in to help educate students and staff. Hopefully this cultural fair continues to be an annual event that students can look forward to and learn more about different heritages!
