As the end of the week approaches, Hinsdale South’s Drama department’s debut performance of Mean Girls the musical is getting closer. While we can all expect to see another incredible performance on the stage this week, we also have to note that there is a lot of work that goes into the production behind the scenes, which is more difficult and demanding than what you may expect.
“We spent around 22 hours here [Hinsdale South] last weekend to prepare for opening,” Junior Caroline Nash said. “We have barely had any free time to relax recently, and we have to dedicate almost all of our time towards the musical.”
Making props, perfecting scenes, and running lines is very time consuming and exhausting. This whole week, members of the Drama Club have had to stay at school rehearsing until around 10 PM, making it nearly impossible to balance school work and extracurricular activities.
“I balance schoolwork and rehearsal time by trying to do as much as I can during class and lunch,” Nash continued. “I put the most important assignments first and the less important ones lower down.”
Since we are now approaching opening night, excitement towards the performance is building up. While it takes a lot of effort to get the show into shape it is also important to “enjoy the process.” Even though the preparation up to the musical is stressful Nash emphasized the enjoyment that goes along with it.
When the musical opens this week, it is important to recognize that all the effort, dedication, and hard work that happened behind the scenes is just as important as what we see on stage.
