Hinsdale South’s girls swim team celebrated the first conference swim win in 12 years on October 25th and beat DGS, the reigning champions. This was a huge moment for the team as they swam hard all season and at conference to achieve their goals.
“I was so overjoyed and proud of our team for working so hard to win”, said Shashi Murphy, a sophomore swimmer.
The team knew they had a good chance of winning going into the meet and was ahead of the competition almost the whole time.
“Getting the plaque and hearing officially that we won put the cherry on top, though,” said Brenna Chan, a sophomore swimmer.
Even though swimming is pretty individualized compared to other sports,a swimmer’s place determines how many points get added to the team’s score. For example, 1st place earns the highest points, 2nd gets the next highest and point values keep decreasing with the places. These points add up throughout the meet and at the end, the team with the most points wins. At conference, the Hornets’ points totaled to 315 while DGS had 275.5.
“It feels great to have [a win] after so many years of losing to DGS”, said Murphy.
Saturday’s win did not come easily as the team had to put in lots of hard work to get there. In addition they had a disadvantage with their smaller team.
“Compared to teams like DGS, we are probably 1/3 of their amount. And having a lot of people on a team can be quite helpful when getting points,” said Chan.
Now as the team looks towards sectionals and state, new goals and limits are being set to wrap up their successful season.
“Some personal goals I have is to make it to IHSA State at Sectionals this year [and] hopefully place in [the] top 16 as well”, said Chan.
