After a dramatic final yesterday morning at Milano Cortina, Eileen Gu once again took the silver medal in women’s slopestyle, narrowly missing the gold to defending champion Mathilde Gremaud of Switzerland for the second Olympics in a row.
At the 2022 Beijing Olympics, Gu made history, becoming the youngest gold medalist in freeskiing with the big air event. She was also the first (and only, so far) freeskiing Olympian to win three medals at a single Olympics, as she won the halfpipe event that same year, as well as silver for slopestyle.
Slopestyle is a freestyle skiing event where skiers do tricks on a course with rails and jumps. Scores are out of 100, and are based on execution as well as style–on the course, skiers have multiple routes they can take, giving them more freedom to show off their skills in different ways. Factors that play a role in scoring include creativity, amplitude, and the number of rotations and inverts a skier does.
With competitors launching themselves 30-50 feet in the air at speeds of up to 60 mph on jumps, slopestyle and other freeski events are both impressive to watch and dangerous. Even expert freeskiers take tumbles, which is why they’re given three chances to put on their best run at the Olympic finals.
On her best run, which scored an 86.58 (0.38 off from the top spot), Gu landed 1080- and 1260-degree double corks, as well as an impressive rail trick. If you haven’t seen it, go watch right now! You’re sure to be amazed.
In the next couple of weeks, Gu will be defending her gold medals in the big air (Feb. 14-16th) and halfpipe (Feb. 19-21) events. Will the 22-year-old keep her top spot or lose it to an up-and-comer?
