Firefighters from the Tri-State Fire Protection Station showed up at Hinsdale South on Thursday, but there wasn’t a fire in sight. Instead, they were there to tell students about their careers in firefighting, let them hold tool, and create a positive relationship with the school that’s right across the street.
During an interview, Lt. Dave Davis explained why he wanted to do this event
“I’ve asked to do this event for about three years now, and I’m so glad that they let this event happen. It feels good to be with the community that we are close to. As this is our first year coming here for such an event we hope to be able to do this next year.”
During the event the fire station also announced a competition to design a new logo for the fire station, in which Hinsdale South students could create a new design for the fire station’s logo to replace the outdated one.

Brandon Gudovitz, an engineer at the station, started the current logo:
“[It] was actually designed by me, I wanted a logo that represented your school (Hinsdale South) so I looked back on the history of your school’s logos and settled for a design based on the old hornet design.”
The firemen gave out free firehats to students, creating a fun atmosphere around the event through students wearing them throughout the lunchroom and hallways. They distributed those hats from the firetruck that they brought, which students got to take a look inside.
This event was a gesture by the Tri State Fire Station, as it brought students closer to their community, while still being in school.
Photography classes came down to take photos of the event and students happily conversing with the firefighters and EMTs. Students from all over the lunchroom also came to the event, and got to hold fire axes, and various other types of equipment.
During an Interview with the photography teacher, Mr Richert, he explained the lesson he was trying to teach when he would bring his students out for the event.
“I wanted to show students how we can get involved,” Richert said. “These people (the firemen and EMTs) risk their lives to keep us safe everyday.”
