The Trump administration has recently revoked forty million dollars from Columbia University for ‘illegal’ pro-Palestinian protests against the war in Gaza and US support for Israel. Last year, the college was the center of protests. According to four federal agencies, there was “continued inaction in the face of persistent harassment of Jewish students,” with the Trump administration stating the college failed to avoid antisemitism on campus.
Last year, the Ivy League school saw multiple large protests against Israel’s military operations in Gaza. Columbia interim president Katrine Armstrong wrote, “There is no question that the cancellation of these funds will immediately impact research and other critical functions of the University, impacting students, faculty, staff, research, and patient care.” For perspective, federal funding was 1.3 billion of the school’s operating revenue in 2024.
Lately, more campuses have been instituting regulations to reduce protest activity. Some school officials said, “we face an existential threat” for the Trump administration’s cancellation of funding targeted schools that had tolerated antisemitism. The administration listed George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, New York University, Northwestern University, the University of California, Los Angeles, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Minnesota, and the University of Southern California.
