Running 3 miles is no easy feat, but running that distance below a 7-minute/mile pace is even more commendable. Senior Annabella Ramirez had a successful conclusion to her high school career, competing at the 2A IHSA Girls’ Cross Country State Meet at Detweiller Park earlier this month.
Ramirez started running cross country her sophomore year due to influence from friends and to prepare for soccer in the spring. Feeling behind everyone else, she described her first year as a challenging one.
“What kept me going was my teammates,” stated Ramirez. “The seniors were really encouraging.”
At the start of the season, Ramirez was set on qualifying for State, but a small injury set her back.
Before competing, she commented, “This past month I’ve been taking it meet by meet, whatever happens, happens.”
Following her race, Ramirez was satisfied with her performance. “Part of me felt like I could’ve done better, and I could’ve had a P.R., but at the end of the day, I made it here, and that’s good enough for me.”
Ramirez plans on attending West Point and majoring in Life Sciences and Biology. She might consider running for an intramural club in the future.
When referring to her experience, Ramirez states, “I wouldn’t have traded it for anything.”
