On September 8, 2023, 20 year old Olivia Rodgrigo released her second studio album GUTS. The album peaked at No. 1 on Billboard’s chart, making it her second album to do so. All twelve songs on the album were at one point in the top 40 on Billboard’s top 100.
To promote the album, “Vampire,” was released on June 30th. It hit 1 on Billboard’s top 100 for two weeks. Since her first album, SOUR, did so well, it is impressive that GUTS surpassed it in units sold in the United States by about 7,000. The tone between the two albums contrast. Her first album was much softer, while this one has more alternative influences in it.
This album relates to Rodrigo figuring out her own identity and growing up. In a statement Rodrigo said, “I feel like I grew 10 years between the ages of 18 and 20- it was such an intense period of awkwardness and change. I think that’s all just a natural part of growth, and hopefully the album reflects that.” GUTS‘ relatable overall message and popular genre helped it rise to popularity.
Rodrigo’s music career is continuing to expand as she announced that she will begin her tour for her new album in February.
