Football, soccer, and tennis are all sports that have been present at South for decades. Electronic sports, however, are a new addition to the lineup. Hinsdale South has its own e-sports club that meets two Mondays per month. E-sports club is non-competitive and open to all students. At club meetings, students play games on Nintendo switches and enjoy snacks after school.
“It’s a great way to hang out, make friends, and enjoy gaming together,” said Mrs. Erikson, the e-sports club sponsor, when asked why South students should join e-sports club. The best part for her was “meeting new students and getting to know them beyond the classroom”. Right now, e-sports is all about laid back fun, however, “[they’d] love to grow the club in the future and maybe even compete one day.”
“We do a lot of Mario Kart, Nintendo Sports, [and Super] Smash Bros.” said Natalie, a second year member. “They are really fun, and I like hanging out with everybody.” Natalie is the only girl in the club and believes this is due to most girls having commitments to sports.
Josh, a second year member, said his favorite part of the e-sports club “is to be able to enjoy gaming with other individuals,” and he also likes gaming outside of school.
The e-sports club has been around for 4 years, but this year is Mrs. Erikson’s first year as the sponsor. “[Things have] changed drastically [because of] the different club teacher [and] more people, which is great,” said Aiden. Other club members like Max disagree that the changes have been so great.
