With the stress of just returning from break, the end of the semester quickly approaching, and the looming dread of midterms, I’m sure we can all use a bit of cheering up. Why not do that by finding some holiday cheer, as it is December! I know it can be hard when it feels like we’re stuck in class, daydreaming about what life was like on break. Luckily for you, there are tons of fun and festive activities that you can partake in around the area, with some taking place right here at Hinsdale South!
Have you felt like an animal lately, unable to go outside due to the cold weather? If so, head on over to Brookfield Zoo to witness their annual Holiday Magic. See all the locally donated and decorated Christmas trees. They are also continuing their iconic light festival with over 2 million LED lights. It runs December 5th-8th, 12th-15th, 19th-22nd, and 26th-31st. They’ll have plenty of festive treats such as hot chocolate and candied nuts for a limited time. To get tickets, check out their website www.brookfieldzoo.org/holidaymagic.
One of my favorite parts about the holiday season is all the feel-good movies. Let me tell you, there’s nothing better than watching those movies on the big screen. Luckily, many movie theaters are screening these films. One such theater is Hollywood Blvd, which will have showings for It’s a Wonderful Life, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, A Christmas Story, A White Christmas, and more. To get your tickets and more information about their events and showtimes, go to their website at https://www.hollywoodblvdcinema.com. If your favorite movie isn’t listed here or the dates just don’t work out, I highly recommend looking at your local theater to see what they offer.
However, if you’re looking for something at no cost to you, you can find your answer right in your very own neighborhood. Many people celebrate the holidays by decorating their homes. So why not appreciate their hard work by taking a drive around the neighborhood? Pack your favorite holiday snacks, grab some hot chocolate, and take a ride with friends and family to make it an extra special occasion. You might be surprised how what seems like a simple drive around town can become a classic holiday memory!
While this time of the year can be warm and delightful to many, it’s simply not the case for everyone. December can be a rough time for those less fortunate than we are. As it is the season of giving, I highly encourage those who can donate in any way possible. Whether it’s volunteering your time at a homeless shelter, donating clothes, toys, or food, or giving money to those in need, please consider doing something to help others have a wonderful holiday season.
