Typically when you think of Halloween you picture neighborhoods filled with kids in elaborate costumes, trick-or-treating, or pumpkin carvings. But to high school students, Halloween is more than just one night.
Before Halloween even starts it’s the norm for students, typically college and high school students, to go out and party. Then, some students might do something traditional on Halloween, like trick-or-treat or spending time with their friends.
Typically, the weekend after Halloween is another round of partying. This event is called ‘Halloweekend.” In a survey of 122 Hinsdale South students, one question asked participants to state what they think most high school students do on Halloween and Halloweekend. Most described that students probably party or hang out with friends, but in actuality only 11.5% of students actually went to a party on Halloween, and 39.3% of students said they actually participated in Halloweekend.
In a question asking participants what they do on Halloween day, 47.5% of people responded by saying they went trick-or-treating. Most participants in this survey also said they enjoy Halloween because of trick-or-treating, the overall atmosphere of the holiday, and being able to celebrate with friends and family.
Halloween is a holiday that can be celebrated in many different ways, it all just depends on your personal preference.
