The girls tennis team won big during their sectional and state championships. They trained harder than ever preparing themselves for the championship season to begin. The players Chloe Goins, Addy Filipiak, Caitlyn Sattler, Ava Chamberlain, Hailey Goins, Teodora Savic, and Lola Katzel were equipped to play in the sectionals tournament on Saturday, October 19th.
Each player worked to the best of their ability to achieve their spots and win. The two Singles players Chloe Goins and Addy Filipiak worked their way through the bracket and both reached the Championship game. Winning 6-2 and 6-4, Chloe Goins won Singles Sectionals Champion. Addy Filipiak achieved second overall in the tournament.
In the Doubles bracket, Partners Caitlyn Sattler and Ava Chamberlain had a great run as they won their first round with an outstanding score of 6-2 and 6-2, but unfortunately were defeated in the second round. Teodora Savic and Hailey Goins reached the Semifinals and were able to place 2nd in the Doubles bracket of Sectionals. Singles players Chloe Goins and Addy Filipiak and Doubles partners Teodora Savic and Hailey Goins were able to qualify for the State Championship.
Altogether, as a team, the Hinsdale South girl’s tennis team won Sectionals, receiving a plaque for this incredible feat. This was the first time since 1997 that Hinsdale South had won Sectionals. Go Hornets!
Following Sectionals were the State Championships starting October 24th; with Chloe Goins and Addy Filipiak playing Singles as well as Hailey Goins and Teodora Savic playing Doubles. Going into the tournament, their mindsets and strategies to get mentally prepared were a necessity. Senior Chloe Goins explained her mentality leading into state. “My mindset was to focus on everything I could control (my work ethic, attitude, sleep, food). I knew my best chance at doing well was to focus on how I could be at my optimal performance, and not focusing on the weather or my opponents.” They had to entrust themselves and acknowledge their tennis skills to be able to gain a sense of confidence. Though the preparation was stressful and strenuous, the HSHS varsity tennis girls were still able to relax and bond with one another over dinner.
As the championship approached, the girls were prepared for the next 3 days of competition. On day one, every player got through the first, second and third rounds in both Singles and Doubles. Day two, it was the Quarterfinals and Semifinals. Both Goins and Filipiak made it through to the finals, but Teodora Savic’s and Hailey Goins’ season had come to an end as they finished off their state meet achieving All State Doubles Medals. “My favorite part of the tournament was when [Hailey] and I played really well, and beat a team that was seeded higher than us,” says Freshman Teodora Savic.
By the third day both Goins and Filipiak were ready to finish off their season with a huge win. The stands were filled with support and cheers from families and friends. Both girls played their put in all their effort and made their way up the bracket. As the Championship came to a close, both players placed in the Top Three: Chloe Goins finishing in first place as the Singles State Champion and Addy Filipiak finishing in third place. Chloe Goins is the first ever Hinsdale South girls tennis player to win State! Congrats to the HSHS Girls Varsity Tennis Team for placing 2nd at the State Championship.
