Ms. Truman, the Student Support Coordinator at Hinsdale South, plays a vital role in making sure every student feels valued and equipped to succeed. Her work involves dropout prevention, credit recovery, and supporting students facing difficult circumstances, such as those without stable housing.
In her role, Ms. Truman works closely with students who may be at risk of dropping out, helping them stay on track to graduate. She also runs a credit recovery program, allowing students to retake failed classes online so they can catch up with their peers. “It’s all about providing the support they need to finish high school,” she said.
For students facing housing instability, Ms. Truman steps in to make sure they have essentials like clothing, hygiene products, and even food. Her partnership with Einstein Bagels allows her to offer surplus bagels to our students as they leave school, reducing waste and ensuring no one goes hungry. “Kids shouldn’t be hungry, and why should we waste?” she explained. Her dedication has helped create a space where students can focus on school without feeling different or left out.
Additionally, she serves as a community liaison, connecting the school to local organizations and parents to bring valuable resources to students. She’s even trained in restorative practices, helping students resolve conflicts in positive ways.
Ms. Truman’s work is about more than just addressing immediate needs; it’s about making Hinsdale South a welcoming space. “I try to boost confidence, inspire, and get kids feeling good about themselves,” she stated, believing that a supportive environment where no one feels “othered” helps students thrive. Whether she’s providing academic assistance, helping students meet basic needs, or bringing the community together, Ms. Truman’s dedication is felt across Hinsdale South.
