Hinsdale South’s 2024 Homecoming Dance was, like usual, certainly a night to remember. With all things South, though, there’s a wide variety of student opinions to uncover in regards to the song choice and the new indoor setting of this year’s event.
Starting with the most noticeable change: this year’s dance was not held outside, but rather it was split across multiple areas inside of the school. While the extra space might have been nice, it certainly presented a number of problems. Junior Sean Laitman expressed that the gym got “stupid hot,” and that because of the separate areas, “it was hard to meet up with friends throughout the night,” and “many students missed the songs they were excited to listen to.” Opinions on this weren’t only negative though: Senior Jimmy Martin liked how the courtyard had games, and preferred the “tighter space” in the gym when compared to the outdoors.
In regards to the music, student thoughts were also certainly mixed. Just like the setting, Martin also thought “it was good music,” while Senior Gabby Tangorra commented that “it could have been better,” and described it as just “the same two songs that are really popular right now.”
Overall, South’s 2024 Homecoming came with its pros and cons, but it’s not common to see a school dance that satisfies the entire student body. While Laitman “felt like this year was a learning curve” and hopes for improvements for his senior year, this year certainly got the job done, and we’ll wait and see how it gets switched up for 2025.
