The new principal of Hinsdale South, Dr. Kari Peronto has an impressive and dedicated history with our school. In a recent interview she shared her journey, which began over 21 years ago when she started as a special education teacher at south right after college. Over the years, she has held various roles, including activities director, dean for nearly eight years, and most recently, assistant principal. Reflecting on her path, Dr. Peronto said, “I really, really, really wanted to be a principal, and I’m so excited to finally have this role after so many years.” She also mentioned she managed to earn her doctorate while working as a dean and assistant principal to possibly one day become a superintendent, though her heart was always set on becoming a principal.
When asked about her goals for this year, Dr. Peronto emphasized the importance of restoring “South Pride.” “I feel like [in] the past few years we’ve kind of lost ourselves a little bit and what it means to have South Pride,” she explained. This year, she is determined to bring a strong sense of pride and community to south. She talked about how events like Victor’s birthday celebration and Homecoming have already been huge hits. “This was the first time in what felt like a long time where we had to kick you guys out of the dance,” she said, reflecting on how engaged students were, “you guys really didn’t want to leave!”
In terms of advice for students, Dr. Peronto urged them to try new things and ask questions. “Try everything and ask questions. There could be so many things that we offer that you might not even know exist,” she encouraged, reminding students to explore all the opportunities available to them. Her passion for education and commitment to building a supportive community shines through her words, and she’s excited to lead the school through the following years toward a renewed sense of pride.
