While there are various clubs, the times they meet tend to conflict. Most club schedules tend to be something like “every other weekday”, but these clubs typically meet on the same days.
And so the question is: what can be done to solve the problem of overlapping schedules?
For example, the Recording & Broadcasting Club and the Speech Team both meet every other Friday, but they meet on the same Fridays. These two clubs have conflicting schedules and for those who want to be part of both, it can be a struggle to choose which meeting to attend on Friday.
From a student perspective, it truly is difficult to choose one club over another. Freshman Anna Martic said that “it makes [her] feel really stressed [when club schedules collide]… and [she’s] stressed out figuring out how to make things work with everyone.” After asking if the stress causes her to want to leave clubs, she responded, “in the moment, yeah.”
These conflicting club schedules are negatively impacting students, causing them stress and even thoughts of quitting, which really contradicts South’s firm belief that students should be involved and join clubs that interest them.
A solution to fix this issue would be to just meet on different days. One club can meet on the 1st and 3rd Fridays of every month whilst the other meets on the 2nd and 4th Fridays.
However, it might not be as simple as that. Sponsor for both the R&B Club and Speech Team, Ms. Fisher, states that she chooses the date and times for club meetings for “[her] convenience because [she has] the library space where [she works], [she has] the floor space available and it’s easier for [her] to be able to bounce between [her] clubs.”
So how can South improve clubs for students? There might not be an easy fix that works for everyone, but clubs can start small and work to meet on days that are suitable for most members.
