This fall, girl’s flag football was introduced as the newest IHSA sport. There has been a lot of interest in this recently added sport at South and our school has already built a very promising team that we can look forward to with Head Coach Janelle Marconi and Assistant Coach Mary Rounce.
The girls’ first game was against Amos Alonzo Stagg High School. An exciting first game, the Hornets put up a great fight and had a great game, but unfortunately lost 30-6. With the next game against Romeoville High School ending in a loss of 30-8, it seemed like the Hornets were starting off on the wrong foot.
However, the following week, the girls were scheduled to play against Hinsdale Central High School. If you take a look at the track record between South and Central in most sports, our sister school typically holds the advantage; so, going into this game, it might have looked like it would be a repeat of any other sport, but the Hornet’s mentality held strong as they took down the Red Devils with a blowout score of 48-0, not even letting them take a step into the endzone.
Even with flag football being so recently added, the girls are off to a strong start, and our school is excited to see what the future holds for IHSA’s next sport.
