During the month of February a new exhibit was made in the art gallery for Black History Month. While many students have wondered what the meaning behind this exhibit is, the artists that curated the artwork featured find it a reflection of their community.
The art exhibit contains a series of photographs of students that are part of the African American community that show them expressing an emotion or state of mind. This display of emotion displays the culture and perspectives within the Black community at South.
The African American community at Hinsdale South constitutes over a third of the school population. In a poll taken by South students, over 40% said that this art piece impacted them personally. This portrays the impact this exhibit has had on students within the local South community. In an interview with junior Terrence Newell, he said, “This piece allows minorities, especially in the African American community, to see their peers in a different light.” Newell also added that the exhibit brings unity within the Black community and displays “the art that is hidden within the community.”
